GSM Subscribers Seek Reduction In Porting Time

RUE to predictions, an avalanche of complaints now trails the mobile number porting that was kicked-off in Lagos seven days ago.Subscribers, expressed angst Saturday as many of them could not vote out their non-performing mobile operators as promised by the Nigeria communications Commission (NCC).

Former President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Mazi Okechukwu Unegbu, a lawyer, said he did not have confidence in the integrity of the process, especially as all the operators still grapple with poor quality of service.

Saying he subscribes to all the networks — MTN, Airtel, Glo and Etisalat — due to poor network quality, Unegbu noted that, contrary to what obtains in other climes, the process of porting out to a new network in Nigeria remains the most cumbersome.

According to him, “it is like going through the eye of a needle,” a situation that discourages subscribers from making any real attempt to “port out.”“Those trying to port now simply do it for the fun of it, because there is no better offering in any alternative network.”A senior management staff in one of the major GSM service providers yesterday also confirmed that the process “is challenging, as this is not something you can do on your mobile phone.”

He also disclosed that the network was yet to receive any subscriber migrating from a competing network.  “You need to visit our office before you can really port, and this takes time. The disadvantage is that even if you succeed in porting out, you are stuck with the new network until after three months. There could be network challenge and you are stuck for three months,” he warned.

Seven days after the kicked-off of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in Nigeria, the atmosphere looks gloomy, as challenges of process sustainability, adaptability and awareness stirs it in the face. The Guardian, last Sunday, reported exclusively that the major challenge for the process could rest with interconnectivity as the operators expressed dissatisfaction with the “ politically favoured warehousing agent” is said to lack the capacity to drive it “at the moment.”

This reason, according to at least, two major operators, was the reason for the delayed take-off of MNP in the country.A Lagos banker, who simply gave her name as Abimbola, said she actually sent a message to the preferred code of 3232 as stated in the procedure. “I waited to get response for about 36 hours, nothing happened. I was not actually expecting it to be seamless at first like that. My concern is that no text or call from the operators and those managing the process — both the donor and the recipient to know whether they are working on it or not.“Someone, however, said I should go to one of their services centre. But I have not gone; no time for that now.”

Another subscriber, Samson Akpan, a Technician, said his major challenge would be having to wait for 48 hours before switching or porting to another network.“The 48 hours is too long. I don’t think that is obtainable in other climes. If within the 48 hours, there was an emergency or someone wanted to give me a contract and they couldn’t get through to me. Am I not going to lose much”, he stated.Another subscriber, Mrs. Adetoun Ojo, a retired Director of Education in Lagos said: “I won’t port because I am afraid that if I port to any other network and then discover that the network is worse than where I’m coming from, I’ll have to wait for three months to re-migrate.

It is better I remain where I am. Can’t we do it within a day or less than 48 hours?Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, had said the process is expected to encounter some hitches at the beginning. He stressed that those challenges would be overcome as the scheme moved on.Juwah explained that any porting process that didn’t go through within 48 hours “is failed one,” which could be done again.“We actually don’t expect the process to be smooth, seamless at the beginning like this. The technology is new in Nigeria.

PHOTOS: Alligator Crashes Golf Tournament

it isn’t everyday that a giant alligator walks into the middle of a professional sporting event and makes himself at home, but that’s what happened yesterday.

Spectators and marshals were startled when the animal, estimated to be about 12 feet long, marched onto the side of the 12th fairway and started taking in the action, or possibly just sunning himself.

He then made his way through a sand trap and returned to the water.

The animal, who is missing his right front leg, is apparently a regular visitor to the course – and is nicknamed ‘Tripod’ by locals and staff.

Check out the photos of the alligator invasion below.

Jim Iyke and Nadia Buari: New couple alert?

Is Jim Iyke dating Ghanaian actress, Nadia Buari? We all know his official girlfriend is the Jamaican babe, Kenturah Hamilton, who he has been dating on and off for the past five years, but his friendship with Nadia is beginning to make me curious. Yes, it’s my business to be curious about things like this…lol. His publicist this week denied any romantic relationship between Jim and Nadia but we all know they always deny these things until we find out the truth. For two people who aren’t dating, Jim and Nadia seem awfully close. Jim hasn’t been spotted with Kenturah in a while, so they might be taking a break. Has he moved on to Nadia? Let’s analyze these photos and see what we conclude..:-)

The first and second photo above is Jim and Nadia in Dubai in March for 2face Idibia’s wedding. Heard they came together and left together. Peep them holding hands in the right photo. The photo on the left below is the friends at an award ceremony in Uganda in December 2012. The next photo is Jim and Nadia arriving together at his Unscripted premiere in Lagos on Thursday April 18th. The last photo is Jim and Nadia playing around in a desert somewhere in Africa. She posted the photo on her instagram page yesterday and said something about being really happy! Right now, I really can’t say if they are dating…but I will find out! I’m onto you Jim and Nadia. Lol. Cute couple!

Don’t blame Baga killings on us — Army

The authorities of the Defence Headquarters have said the army was not involved in the massacre of over 150 persons in Baga, Borno State.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig.Gen Chris Olukolade, also said in an electronic mail on Saturday no soldier had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Olukolade condemned attempts by some persons to blame the Baga killings on soldiers of the Multinational Joint Task Force.

He said it was absurd to blame acts committed by suspected Boko Haram members on troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force sent to keep peace in the area.

The defence spokesman also condemned moves in some quarters to use the media to whip up public sentiments against the Joint Task Force.

He maintained that the operations of the troops were necessary to provide security and defend the integrity of the country.

Olukolade said, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to declare that no soldier has been arrested or detained on account of the incident that happened in Baga last week as reported in certain newspapers on Saturday.

“The report which claimed that 15 soldiers have been arrested in connection with their alleged role in what the medium referred to as ‘Borno Bloodbath’ is indeed false in its entirety.

“At no point did the DHQ or any of the services of the Nigerian Armed Forces order the arrest of any of its soldiers in connection with the incident in Baga.

“The untiring efforts by some persons and groups to unduly attribute the killings in Baga to the troops of the Multi National Joint Task Force are however assuming a very unfair and dangerous dimension indeed.

“It is surprising that the atrocities of Boko Haram terrorists are being desperately blamed on the troops even without any meaningful investigations by those promoting these allegations locally and internationally.

“This tendency is clearly in line with the orchestrated effort by a vested interest, using the press, to whip up public resentment against the necessary military operations in defence and security of the nation.”

He said further that it was the position of the DHQ that human lives were precious during operations and shouldn’t be subjected to “unneccesary sensationalism.”

A clash between gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members and the military left many dead in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area, Borno State, on April 20, 2013.

While the Village Head, Mallam Ali, said 185 were killed, with 2,000 houses, 62 vehicles and 486 motorcycles either burnt or vandalised, the Presidency, however, said it believed the figures might have been “grossly exaggerated.”

Authorities of the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, had earlier put the casualty figure at 25.

9 JAMB Candidates Die In Accident

No fewer than nine candidates going to sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations today were feared dead in an auto crash on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, said seven persons, including the driver died instantly while two others died later in hospital. The police did not identify the victims.

The police image maker said that the candidates were travelling on a Hiace bus with registration number Rivers XY 249 from Port Harcourt to Aba.

Ogbonna said that the driver of the bus rammed into a truck with with registration number Lagos XC 109 SLK, parked off the road.

He said that the accident occurred at Obeaku-Ihie in the Ugwunagbor Local Government Area of Abia at about 10.40 a.m.

Ogbonna said that the dead had been deposited at the mortuary while six survivors of the accident were in critical condition and receiving medical attention in a hospital Aba.

He said that the 15 seater-bus, was conveying mainly people, going to sit for the JAMB examination, slated for 27 April.

According to him, the clue comes from the items recovered at the scene of the accident.

A witness, Mr Peter Okolo, attributed the accident to over-speeding and recklessness on the part of the driver.

He said that the driver lost control of the vehicle when he wanted to overtake a vehicle in front of him.

“When he saw an upcoming vehicle while he was over-taking the car in front of him, he veered off the road and then rammed into the truck parked off the road,” Okolo said.
